The Society of the Missionaries of St. Francis Xavier,
commonly known as the Society of Pilar, was founded
on September 26, 1887 by Fr. Bento Martins, a priest
with extraordinary vision.
Inspired by the zeal to make Jesus Christ known
to the new places brought under the erstwhile
Portuguese rule, he formed a group of like-minded
people at Agonda, Goa and named the Society after
the great Jesuit Missionary Francis Xavier.
Over the years, the Society has been growing
in strength, size and number. At present, the
Society is working in 25 dioceses in India and
abroad.
The Society has erected four Provinces in India:
Delhi, Goa, Kolkata and Mumbai.
