The CBCI established a full-fledged
Public Relations Office in 1992 to promote the
Church’s active communication with the community
through both secular and religious media.
This Office has been recently renamed
as the Media and Information Office of the CBCI.
The media work of the Church in
India is specifically meant to propagate the good
news among the people in the most impartial manner.
The task of the Media and Information
Office is not just in projecting the good image
of the Church or speaking up during the times
of crisis. It is a perennial link between the
media, the church and the people.
Though the Church in India is a
minority institution, it is influential and could
boldly present its views on issues affecting the
society.
The Media and Information Office
of the CBCI takes the lead in speaking out on
violations of human rights by sharing information
with the media clearly, precisely and fast.
Functions
of the Media and Information Office of the CBCI
are the following:
Establishing contacts
with media and journalists at all levels
Establishing contacts
with Government offices and ministers
Monitoring and
responding to media reports on Christian issues
Organizing press
conferences and press releases from time to
time
Following up court
cases filed against or by the Church, in various
courts
Maintaining regular
communication within the Church by informing
Bishops and publishing information in Church
chronicles and newspapers
Training diocesan priests,
nuns and lay people about the importance of
media work
Conducting awareness
programmes among Catholic journalists about
issues affecting the Church
