Medical Mission Sisters is an international religious congregation founded by Anna Dengel, an Austrian doctor (1892-1980) in Washington, USA. After the foundation of MMS in 1925, the Society spread out to different mission countries to establish Catholic hospitals and training schools.

The first attempt to promote vocations in India was made in 1940 by Fr. Sebastian Pinakattu in the Changanacherry diocese. The Indian Medical Mission Foundation was started in 1944. Now, the IHM Hospital, Mary Giri, Bharananganam, and Holy Family Hospitals at Patna and Mandar are well known for their nursing care and education.

Our mission in India is:
Integrated development programmes for dalits, tribals, women and children
** People's movement among fish workers and women groups
* * Holistic health/healing using alternative methods of treatment
** Prevention and care of HIV/AIDS
** Cancer care of patients
** Alcohol/drug de-addiction, mental health, counseling and advocacy
** Involvement through hospitals
